Varallo - “P. Calderini” Natural History Museum

ZonaMedium and low Valsesia

After 150 years from its foundation in 1867, the Natural History Museum "Pietro Calderini” has reopened its doors to visitors in June 2017 with a new staging.

The project to create a Natural History Museum was born after the will of Pietro Calderini, a Valsesia-native priest, and by courtesy of "Società d’Incoraggiamento dello Studio del Disegno” of a room inside the Palazzo Sociale. The goal: to provide young students from the Regie Scuole Tecniche of Varallo naturalistic materials to support their studies of scientific disciplines in a more efficient way. It was Calderini himself who encouraged all willing individuals to donate preparations, objects or scientific publications to enrich the museum and its library.

This enabled to create an ethnographic and archaeological section to be admired next to the zoologic, botanical and geologic collections.

The new staging re-confers the Museum a more rigorous scientific order, offering an accurate organization and arrangement of the collections based on their typology: natural sciences, archaeology and demo-ethnography; staging and reopening works of the latter are in progress.
