Itinerary: This route winds at different altitudes along the left-hand side of the Val Cavaione. It is not very difficult and leads to the discovery of numerous hamlets and characteristic mountain pastures where you can find a lot of historical art. The route leaves from the small shaded square of the village of Rossa, taking the mule track with no. CAI 400, passing the chapel of the Madonna del Purgatorio and some fields. This takes you to the hamlet of Piana, where the oratory of San Giovanni Il Vecchio can be admired. From here, a mule track leads to the hamlet of Rainero following the sign for no. 399. In Taià there is a diversion which climgs along path no. 403 which takes you to the ridge of Alpe Selletto. The descent is along the main mule track which crosses Alpe Tù delle Rogge and Alpe Grassura, then Alpe Sasso Maddalena and finally arrives at Alpe Sull’Oro. (From here a path leads down crossing the Cavaione stream, to the other side of the valley at the Seccio).
To return to Rossa follow path no. 396, which runs lower and nearer to the stream than the one on the ascent. You then come down through fields and bushes, passing the Pissa del Cainin (a beautiful waterall down a rocky wall) and come to small hamlets full of art, history and tradition.
Points of interest: the oratory of San Giovanni Battista "Il Vecchio” (John the Baptist "the Elder”) with frescoes from the 14th century at Piana; the chapel of the Signore che dorme (Sleeping Lord), at Selletto; the oratory of the Madonna del Sasso at Alpe Sasso Vercelli, the oratory of Giavinelle with frescoed facade by Martinoglio; the oratory of San Rocco and the parish church of Assunta (the Assumption) at Rossa; various evidence of civil and religious architecture.
