Baroque in the Province
Baroque in the Province
From the Alps to the plain, the Baroque is a movement that has found solid roots in the Province of Vercelli; Vercelli, Varallo, San Germano Vercellese, Alagna, Borgosesia, Lucedio and many other places shine of the fervent artistic activity of that period, between 1680 and 1750.
Particular confirmation of these words can be seen in the Basilica dell'Assunta of theSacro Monte of Varallo. Once at the top of Sacro Monte, the view opens onto the square, where the visitor's gaze is captured by the Basilica of the Assumption. Tall, massive and richly decorated with gold details, it gives that pleasant sensation of welcome and undoubted industriousness of man.
Very similar is also the Abbey of Santa Maria a Lucedio (Trino), built in the mid-eighteenth century, taking the fashionable forms of the Baroque universe.
In Vercelli, many churches have received important restorations in the above mentioned historical period, giving a remarkable baroque imprint to religious buildings built in previous centuries; among the most important are: the Cathedral of S. Eusebio, the former Church of Santa Chiara, the Sanctuary of the Madonna degli Infermi (S. Bernardo), S. Anna, S. Antonio Abate, S. Bernardino, S. Cristoforo, S. Maria Maggiore Nuova, S. Vittore and the Archiepiscopal Seminary.
In the villages of the Province, numerous parish churches have been adapted to conform to the artistically modal canons of the time; the most important are: the Parish Church of St. Giovanni in Alagna Valsesia, the Parish Church of St. Giovanni Battita in Rima and the Parish Church of St. Giacomo in Rimasco (Alto Sermenza), the parish church of S. Antonio Abate and the parish church of S. Pietro in Boccioleto, the parish church Annunciazione di Maria and the parish church of SS. Pietro and Paolo in Borgosesia, the parish church of S. Abbondio in Buronzo, the parish church of S. Giacomo in Campertogno, the parish church of S. Cecilia in Caresanablot, the parish church of S. Lorenzo in Cellio (Cellio con Breia), the parish church of S. Emiliano and the church of S. Defendente in Cigliano, the parish church of the Assunta in Crescentino, the parish church of S. Giovanni Battista and Giuseppe in Mollia, the parish church of SS. Quirico and Giulitta in Olcenengo, the Parish Church of S. Stefano in Piode, the Parish Church of the Assunta in Prarolo, the Parish Church of S. Germano in San Germano Vercellese (the presence, inside, of a magnificently preserved 17th century organ is also remarkable) and the Parish Church of S. Bartolomeo di Scopa.
